It all started as simple bump on my Mini Schnauzer and later realized they are ticks. I then started researching and wondering how she is infested as she is kept indoors. Anyway here's sharing some tips and tricks of what I found out and doing to keep her clean.
It looks like 3 possible parasites infestation on dogs being ticks, fleas and mites. Cleaning the dog itself is not hard but the total eradication of the parasites may take months as need follow through as we have to get rid of them throughout their whole life cycle. The dog may get reinfested as new ticks are hatched.
Several tools came to mind with the simplest are shampoos which are Class IV poison. Be very careful as I remember years ago my puppy died after a washing most probably poison ingested. Thus being a puppy I was hesitant and extra careful of my options. Lots of articles show using tick removal tweezers but I actually used my fingers to feel through and pull the ticks off and drowned
The biggest are like raisins, soft as already full of blood. Hold the body near to the head and jiggle left right to loosen the grip and pull. It should detach but problem are not to pull too many furs along. Doing that actually reduces many adult ticks and the medium size smaller ones are more troublesome and harder to remove besides feeling icky. They crawl like spiders but has 6 legs.
Quick visit to the local pet shop suggested a talcum like powder remedy which I've tried. Verdict is it felt like it's lessen and raisin like ticks are no longer many down to 1-2 but the small ones are still there and alive when removed. Looks like it does slow down or hinder but doesn't kill the ticks. The puppy is like an aborigine though white with powder :)
Sharing some other findings that we should also launder all the sheets and vacuum them throwing away the bags as the eggs may hatch. Doing this till the infestation is controlled or eradicated.
I also worry about cross infection of the ticks to my Khao Manee cats whom a kitten Elsa kept coming to play with Mini. After a week of manual removal and herbal powder remedy, I finally took Mini to the vet who after assessing the situation gave a pill which will work for a month. Another option is a spray also a Class IV poison but supposedly safe for puppy. It's working so far:)
Hope this is helpful and do check out my many other blogs.
